What legacy will Queen Elizabeth II leave behind?

Queen Elizabeth II has been Queen of the United Kingdom and its overseas territories since 1952, and she’s now the longest-reigning monarch in British history, having surpassed Queen Victoria’s record 63 years and 216 days on September 9, 2015. What will her legacy be? It’s still too early to tell, but there are some obvious ways in which she’ll leave her mark on England after her reign ends. Here are five things we think Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy will be...

The story of how she became a monarch Elizabeth took the throne from her father when she was only 25 years old, and it didn't take long for people to see that she had grown up into a woman who was determined to face the challenges ahead with a headstrong commitment. Much of this has to do with her upbringing as the only daughter of George VI, who reigned during World War 2. Throughout his reign, George's personal devotion to duty and steadfastness inspired everyone in their fight against Nazi tyranny, no matter what their position in society. Her father's death and succession may have been one of the more challenging moments for Elizabeth but it turned out that not everything has gone without some turbulence.

Her family life The Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex are her only children. After her death, they could be next in line for the throne. She has no grandchildren but she does have nine great-grandchildren and five (so far) great-great-grandchildren from her three daughters: The Princess Royal, The Princess Margaret and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones. Her children have a family life with nannies and grandparents and married to people outside of their immediate family. One could argue that there is not much a British Monarch can do to influence change or the future for this country in the long term.

The challenges she overcame Queen Elizabeth's first major challenge in her life was her father's death. She had only been 10 years old at the time and had to assume the role of heir to the throne. Five years later, she had another major loss when her mother died at age 84. However, this event had a profound impact on young Elizabeth and helped form her matriarchal tendencies as an adult, where she devoted herself to supporting and mentoring children from broken homes as well as establishing various organizations for disadvantaged children around the world.

How she reigned The British Royal Family is one of the oldest and most respected families in the world. They've ruled the country for centuries and taken on many different titles, including king or queen. The British Royal Family began with King Henry VIII and his wife, Catherine of Aragon. While they had a long reign together, Catherine bore only one daughter, Mary I. They divorced shortly after that but continued to share power on a co-monarchy basis until Henry's death in 1547 when their son, Edward VI became king. He then died just a few years later at 15 in 1603 which made his half sister Princess Elizabeth next in line for the throne since she was older than any of her brothers.

How she left her mark on history Queen Elizabeth II will always be remembered for her loyalty to Britain, both during WWII and the terrorist attacks of September 11th. In her latter years, she quietly campaigned for interfaith understanding and championed efforts to reduce animal cruelty. Although she has ruled over us for sixty years, we can't begin to guess what legacy she will leave behind. One thing is certain: we'll never forget her.
